gotta love google spammers

Wednesday, December 15th, 2004

As you may have seen, there is a growing number of lame websites which come up in the top 10 search results for just about everything, but are irrelevant to just about everything. The idea is that by luring visitors, they can chalk up more cheap “clicks” and sell more advertising. Search spam.

Mercifully, Google seems to have found a way to zap those guys, but it used to be that if you searched for — say — “McDonnell-Douglass,” you might find a page with “McDonnell-Douglass Superstore! Shop for best deals on McDonnell-Douglass free coupons, escalade shania twain, survivor crack baby hoodies …”

Found this last month and it made me laugh. A company that sells web hosting had a list of “Related Links” on their homepage, including the following:

  • Reseller Web Hosting
  • Web Hosting Company
  • Web Hosting
  • Sting

And of course, the page for Sting really does have search results for Sting concert tickets.

Now that’s an old site

Stumbled across Autek, via a broken link. Great stuff —

“If you’re using Netscape 2.0 or greater, check out this great listing of Java-related stuff!”

“Ask almost anyone if they’ve heard of the Internet (the Net) and the answer would be yes. But ask what it is, and they’d probably smile and shrug their shoulders.”

Aside: Back when NS2 was coming out, dontcha wish you had a copy of FireFox? Oh, yeah, and an 0.5GHz machine to run it on?
